3 days Fes Merzouga desert tour
itinerary
Day 1: Fez – Ifrane – Azrou – Erfoud – Merzouga
After breakfast, we will leave the city of Fez and travel towards the dunes of Merzouga. To get there, we will head towards the Middle Atlas, and visit Ifrane, known as the Switzerland of Africa. The next town where we will pass, will be Azrou, “the rock”, where we will stop to observe its forest and thus see the monkeys in freedom. Following the path through the Tizi Talghemt or Camel Neck, at 1,907 meters of altitude and where the relief is impressive since the mountains are completely bare, and it seems that they are covered in a purple coat. We will arrive at Errachidia and on the way we will be able to observe the Tafilalet massif,
We will continue the path through the palm grove of Erfoud. This is where we will continue our path by track until we reach the famous fine sand dunes of Erg Chebbi next to Merzouga. Upon arrival, they will have free time to enjoy the calm of the desert and see how the dunes change color. Dinner and accommodation at the hotel.
Day 2: Erg Chebbi – Merzouga
The second day we will dedicate to enjoy the most spectacular part of the Eastern Sahara. We will enter the desert in the 4 × 4, we will visit nomadic villages, we will see oases and we will ride through those of Erg Chebbi. Following the route, we will visit the famous town of Khamlia where the Gnawa are, descendants of slaves from Africa, and we will enjoy their surprising folk music. At sunset we will return to the hotel to take the camels that will take us to the Berber camp in the middle of the dunes, where we will spend the night. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 3: Merzouga – Fez
After returning with the camels, we will leave for Rissani – Morocco’s first imperial city, where we can admire its peculiar market, unique in these latitudes, where the nomadic tribes of the desert go to stock up. Very curious to see is its donkey parking. On the way to Erfoud, we will have a panoramic view of the Ziz Valley with its palm groves and Gorges. And once passing the port of Tizi-n-Talghomt, we will arrive in Midelt where we will have lunch. Then we will leave on the road towards the cedar forest.
